The adventurous history of the Friulian language and its literature
Una splendida favella
With Flavio Santi, professor at the University of Insubria, and William Cisilino, ARLeF’s director
An ARLeF – Regional agency for the friulian language production
Just over 80 minutes to tell a thousand years of history of the Friulian language. This is the challenge Flavio Santi and William Cisilino accepted to answer questions such as: Who shaped the most eastern of the Ladin languages? Which women and which men, starting from the Middle Ages, have chosen and claimed the use of marilenghe to make art? But above all: Why is Friulian a language? During the performance, Santi and Cisilino retraced the facts that led to the birth of Friulian and its affirmation as a language, outlining an unprecedented portrait of the Friulian language, as a synthesis of the cultures that have crossed Friuli over the centuries.
Recorded on May 11, 2024, at the Torre di Santa Maria in Udine, during the Vicino/Lontano Festival
