For the search, any capital letters and accents are ignored in the word list as well as in the entries. For example, when you search for pes
in Friulian, the results will include both pes
and pês
. The same entries are displayed also when you search for pês
.
This function is available for the search of Friulian words (to address any ambiguity in the Friulian spelling) as well as Italian words (it is particularly useful for certain foreign words now used in standard Italian, such as débâcle or élite).
The search results include both one-word entries and multi-word entries (phrases) that contain the word searched for. For example, if you look for the word casa
, results will also include phrases such as: ‘a casa mia’, ‘aprire casa’, ‘Casa Bianca’.
Search by groups
To search for an entry or a list of entries by groups, you can use the special characters *
and ?
:
*
stands for a sequence of zero or any characters (therefore even a void sequence).
For example, if you search for par*
in Italian, the results will include all the entries beginning with par
(parte, parto, partita, etc.);
if you search for *pace
, the results will include all the entries ending with pace
(capace, pace, rapace, etc.);
if you search for let*ra
, the results will include all the entries that begin with let
and end with ra
(lettera, letteratura, lettura);
?
stands for any single character.
For example, if you search for per?
in Italian, the results will include all the entries beginning with per
followed by a single letter (pera, pero, però, Perù);
The special characters *
and ?
can be used at the beginning of a word (for example a*
), at the end (for example *a
), or inside (for example a*b
). They can be used either multiple times (for example a*b*
) or both at the same time (for example a?b*
). For example you can search for the sequence *b?c*
, which will result in all the entries that contain a letter b
followed by another letter by a letter c
(abaco, abboccare, etc.).
